• Drain the battery below 25% before you start on this repair. A charged lithium-ion battery can catch fire or explode if punctured or damaged
• These MacBook Pros can power on by themselves when the bottom case comes off or a charger is connected. Before you start, turn off AutoBoot in Terminal with sudo nvram AutoBoot=%00 (set it back afterwards with sudo nvram AutoBoot=%03), and disconnect the battery as soon as the case is off
• Always power down your device prior to working on it
• The P5 pentalobe, and T3, T5 and T8 Torx screwdrivers you need are included in the box with this battery.
• Always track your screws to avoid putting back in the wrong place and damaging your device. You can draw a picture of your laptop and tape the screws to the right places or use a screw mat
• The bottom case is held by six P5 pentalobe screws (four 4.7 mm, two 6.6 mm) and four hidden clips. Lift the front edge with a suction cup, release the clips with a pick, then slide the case towards the front rather than lifting it up. Mind the sharp edges
• Make sure you always unplug the battery before attempting any component removal
• Peel the cover off the battery control board, peel the tape over the data cable, flip up the ZIF lock and slide the cable out. Then remove the T5 screw on the battery power connector and lift it clear of its socket
• The trackpad has to come out (two T3 bracket screws, then 13 T5 screws of two lengths that look alike). Its cable is stuck to the battery, so warm it gently and peel it off without tearing it. Keep the small washers from the screw posts
• The logic board also has to come out (mixed T3, T5 and T8 screws). Bag and label every screw as you go
• Remove the two T5 screws holding the battery control board
• The cells are glued to the top case. Cover the display and keys with foil, tape over the trackpad opening and tilt the MacBook, then work in pairs (right, left, centre): a few drops of adhesive remover or isopropyl alcohol, wait about two minutes, and slide a plastic card under. Watch for leaks through the holes under the centre cells
• Never pry against a cell with metal tools, and never bend, squeeze or puncture the cells when removing the old battery or fitting the new one
• Clean off all the old adhesive. Test-fit the new battery, make sure the data cable is not pinched under the control board, press each cell down, and peel only the clear liner, not the black covers
• Once it is back together, turn AutoBoot back on with sudo nvram AutoBoot=%03
• If your newly installed battery is draining fast or shutting off randomly, first try the battery calibration steps found here. If that doesn't resolve it, try an SMC reset
