• Drain the battery below 25% before you start on this repair. A charged lithium-ion battery can catch fire or explode if punctured or damaged
• These MacBook Pros can power on by themselves when the bottom case comes off or a charger is connected. Before you start, turn off AutoBoot in Terminal with sudo nvram AutoBoot=%00 (set it back afterwards with sudo nvram AutoBoot=%03), and disconnect the battery as soon as the case is off
• Always power down your device prior to working on it
• The P5 pentalobe, T3 and T5 Torx screwdrivers you need are included in the box with this battery.
• Always track your screws to avoid putting back in the wrong place and damaging your device. You can draw a picture of your laptop and tape the screws to the right places or use a screw mat
• The bottom case is held by six P5 pentalobe screws (two 6.2 mm, four 3.4 mm) and four hidden clips. Lift the front edge with a suction cup, release the clips with a pick, then slide the case towards the front rather than lifting it up. On reassembly, hook the hinge-side clips first
• Make sure you always unplug the battery before attempting any component removal
• Peel back the tape, flip up the black locking tab and slide the battery data cable out parallel to the board. Then remove the T5 screw on the battery power connector and lift it clear of its socket
• The trackpad has to come out (two T3 bracket screws, then ten T5 screws). Its cable is glued to the top of the battery, so warm it gently and peel it off without folding it. Keep the six small washers from under the trackpad
• The logic board also has to come out, because the battery control board screws sit underneath it. Bag and label the screws as you go - there are many T3 and T5 sizes
• The Touch ID flex is glued to the logic board. Warm it and separate it gently with a pick. Touch ID is paired to the logic board, so a torn flex cannot be replaced
• Remove the two T5 screws holding the battery control board
• The cells are glued to the top case. Cover the display with foil, tape over the trackpad opening and between the battery and each speaker, then tilt the MacBook so the adhesive remover or isopropyl alcohol runs away from what you are protecting. Wait about two minutes and lift each cell with a plastic card
• Never pry against a cell with metal tools, and never bend, squeeze or puncture the cells when removing the old battery or fitting the new one
• Clean off all the old adhesive and fit the new battery. Start the logic board screws loosely, align the board, then tighten, and check no cables are trapped underneath
• Once it is back together, turn AutoBoot back on with sudo nvram AutoBoot=%03
• If your newly installed battery is draining fast or shutting off randomly, first try the battery calibration steps found here. If that doesn't resolve it, try an SMC reset
