iFixit MacBook Air 15" 2023 (M2) Battery Replacement Guide

• Drain the battery below 25% before you start on this repair. A charged lithium-ion battery can catch fire or explode if punctured or damaged
• These MacBook Airs can power on by themselves when the lid opens or a charger is connected. On macOS Sequoia or later, run sudo nvram BootPreference=%00 in Terminal (undo afterwards with sudo nvram -d BootPreference). Power down, and on older macOS keep the lid closed until the battery is disconnected
• The P5 pentalobe, T3 Torx and 3IP Torx Plus screwdrivers are included in the box. On the M2 2023 model the speakers and logic board also use 4IP and 5IP screws, which a T4 and T5 turn with firm downward pressure
• Always track your screws to avoid putting back in the wrong place and damaging your device. You can draw a picture of your laptop and tape the screws to the right places or use a screw mat
• The bottom case is held by four 6.4 mm P5 pentalobe screws. Lift the front edge with a suction cup, release the snap clips with a pick, then slide the case back to free the tabs at the rear. The case edges are sharp
• Before any component removal, peel the tape off the battery connector cover, remove its two 1.5 mm 3IP screws and lift the connector straight up
• On the M3 and M4 models, remove the trackpad cable cover (1.5 mm 3IP screws) and gently warm and peel the trackpad cable off the battery. iFixit's M2 2023 guide removes the speakers and logic board instead
• Remove the battery tray screws (4.6 mm and 2.5 mm), then pull each stretch-release tab slowly at a shallow angle. If one snaps, add a few drops of isopropyl alcohol at the edge, wait a minute and lift the tray with a plastic card
• Handle the battery by its tray and don't bend it. Never pry against a cell with metal tools, and never bend, squeeze or puncture the cells when removing the old battery or fitting the new one
• The new adhesive strips come in the box and are not pre-attached. Fit them to the new battery before you put it in
• If your newly installed battery is draining fast or shutting off randomly, first try the battery calibration steps found here. Apple silicon Macs have no SMC reset - shut down, wait 30 seconds and restart
